Fort Sanders Educational Development Center
Est. 2024
Garden Liaison: Logan Warkentin
Spaces Supported: Vegetable Garden
Student Engagement: Afterschool Garden Club
The YGEP has been serving Fort Sanders Educational Development Center students since the Summer of 2024, when it first engaged with the preschool-aged students via the SHADES of Development program. What started as a single raised bed has now grown into five eight-foot in-ground beds for vegetable production! YGEP staff engage with students both over the summer and during the school year, leading students in planting seeds, watering their garden, harvesting their yields, and exploring the local ecosystem that helps the garden thrive. The YGEP is excited to expand its reach to include students and teachers during the daytime as well. This teacher-informed expansion is anticipated to break ground in Spring of 2026, allowing teachers to utilize a hands-on learning space for their yearly natural science unit.
