Student Engagement: Daytime Curricular Enrichment
Farragut High School, through Knox County School’s 865 Academies, has a robust Academy of Agriculture, Construction, and Leadership. Students have the opportunity to participate in Horticultural Science and Greenhouse Management classes, led by Ms. Val Elton. The campus has a large greenhouse, a designated community garden, several native plant landscaping areas – even goats and chickens! – all of which students play an active role in caring for and maintaining. Since the Spring of 2025, the YGEP has been supporting Ms. Elton’s efforts by offering curricular enrichment and career exploration opportunities for students, giving an in-depth look into what a career in community agriculture could look like. The YGEP also provides some material and maintenance support for their community garden, leading produce distribution and helping to keep the space productive during the summer months.
