The Phyllis Wheatley Center has been a pillar of the East Knoxville community for over a century. Since its founding in 1920, the Center has been a source of support and community empowerment. The YGEP is honored to have partnered with the Phyllis Wheatley Center in their mission for empowering the youth of East Knoxville since 2023, primarily supporting their large vegetable growing space. The Phyllis Wheatley Center serves as a hub for the YGEP, where it grows vegetable starts for all its gardens, and where it connects with students who attend other school-based sites. During weekly Garden Clubs at the Phyllis Wheatley Center, students learn to plant vegetables and maintain them for quality vegetable production and plant health. Students harvest their crops and take home the vegetables they produce. The YGEP loves the garden and the community of the Phyllis Wheatley Center.
