Site Visit to New Member Bearden United Methodist Church Community Garden

On August 14, 2025, our core staff had the privilege of visiting Bearden United Methodist Church (BUMC) and meeting with Leigh Cheek, the Garden Coordinator for their new community garden. This visit marked an exciting step in welcoming BUMC into the Knox County Community Gardens and Growers Alliance. Leigh shared the Church’s vision for using their garden to expand food access and community outreach. As part of their ongoing ministry, BUMC distributes food boxes every second Saturday from May through October, beginning at 2:30 p.m. and continuing until supplies are gone. In addition, they maintain a blessing box filled with nonperishable items available to neighbors in need. With these efforts, BUMC is already making a meaningful impact right in the heart of Knoxville at their location at 4407 Sutherland Avenue.

During our visit, we discussed both the immediate needs of the garden and opportunities for collaboration. Some of the priorities Leigh identified included support for soil health desiring manure and compost needed to get the garden flourishing. Together, we also explored possibilities for BUMC’s “gleaning and giveaway” partnerships that would help connect the garden’s harvest with families in the community. We are grateful for the chance to walk alongside BUMC as they launch this new chapter, and we look forward to seeing their garden grow into a vibrant space of nourishment, generosity, and connection.
