March 24, 2026  Membership Meeting

The March Alliance Membership Meeting was filled with thoughtful dialogue and meaningful conversation as members, including first time attendees, gathered at Vine Middle Magnet School in East Knoxville to reflect on the growing season ahead and the impact of our shared work. The meeting was superbly led by Erica Lisowe and Nick Thompson, who guide the Alliance’s Youth Garden Education Program, offering members an in-depth look at one of the organization’s most impactful initiatives.

Erica and Nick walked members through the scope of the program, which serves students across 25 schools, highlighting not only what the program does but how it is shaping young people’s relationships with food, learning, and community.

“We want to expand the impact of what we do and have that extra support for something that teachers and children really enjoy, and that parents find very valuable as well. It’s such a huge impact for education and the community, and right here at Vine Middle is where we started,” said Erica.

The conversation sparked engagement from members, with questions and reflections centered on sustainability, access, and the long-term impact of garden-based education in schools. The session created space for deeper understanding of how the Alliance’s work is reaching classrooms and communities across Knoxville.

Following the discussion, members had the opportunity to step outside at Vine Middle Magnet School to see the work in action. Erica and Nick guided the group through the school’s garden spaces, showcasing what students have built and maintained, and offering a firsthand look at how these outdoor classrooms are being used as tools for education and empowerment.
