Sarah Moore Greene Magnet Academy has a legacy of great gardens. The school established both the Jeffersonian Heirloom Garden and the Obama Greens Garden in 2012 and 2013, respectively, to connect students to their Social Studies curriculum and the agricultural history of the country. Students from Sarah Moore Greene were invited to the White House in 2013 to plant on the South Lawn with Michelle Obama in honor of their gardening efforts and their innovative healthy lunch menus. The school also sits adjacent to a large greenway with several fruit trees and a hoop house frame, which the YGEP has utilized for educational enrichment. The YGEP connected with the school in 2023 via their YMCA afterschool program, leading students through the growing process and supplementing with outdoor educational enrichment. The YGEP is proud to continue Sarah Moore Greene’s gardening legacy and hopes to grow the program’s connection to the school.
