A Visit to Dream Valley Farm: Innovation, Soil, and Sustainable Growing

On June 30, 2025,  staff from the Alliance visited Dream Valley Farm, a working farm and education site in NE Knox County at 5108 Clark Drive that showcases both cutting-edge growing systems and time-tested soil practices. The visit offered valuable insight into how diverse production methods can work together to support healthy food, resilient farms, and strong communities.

Vertical Growing in the Greenhouse

One highlight of the visit was Dream Valley Farm’s greenhouse, where towering vertical growing systems were producing an impressive volume of leafy greens. These vertical towers demonstrate how growers can maximize space while maintaining plant health and consistent production. Seeing crops like lettuce, greens, and chard thriving from top to bottom sparked great conversation about efficiency, water use, and the potential for controlled-environment agriculture in community and small-scale farm settings.

Visitors also learned how careful monitoring of light, nutrients, and airflow supports plant growth in these systems, making them a promising option for year-round production.

Building Soil from the Ground Up

Outside the greenhouse, attention turned to soil health. Dream Valley Farm is deeply invested in composting and organic matter management, turning natural materials into rich, living soil. Large compost piles illustrated the importance of temperature, moisture, and time in creating amendments that feed both plants and soil organisms.

These practices reinforce a core principle shared by many community gardeners: healthy soil is the foundation of healthy food. The discussion connected composting at the farm scale with strategies that can be adapted for home gardens and community plots.

Growing Food, Knowledge, and Community

The visit also included a walk through high-tunnel production areas where young plants are carefully tended in containers and grow bags. These systems allow for precise water and nutrient delivery while protecting crops from extreme weather, extending the growing season in our region.

More than just a tour, the day was a chance to exchange ideas, ask questions, and see how innovation and stewardship come together in practice. Dream Valley Farm exemplifies how thoughtful design and experimentation can support sustainable food systems while remaining rooted in community values.

We are grateful to the Dream Valley Farm team for sharing their time, knowledge, and vision. Experiences like this help inspire growers across Knox County to try new approaches, care for the soil, and continue building a more resilient local food system—together.
